“The most important experiences we can have are those that take us to the very limit. That is the only way we learn, because it requires all our courage.”
Over the years I have come define and then redefine what the term Spiritual Warrior or in my lineage Warrior of Light means to me. What's your definition? What are the qualities and characteristics of a Spiritual Warrior?
I have a little trouble with the word, "warrior" because it literally means one who makes war, one who fights. I was a warrior all my life, and it was great, it was empowering and I was very good at it. I fought for good things, for peace and justice. Then I got to a place in my life where I wanted to stop fighting, partly because I just wanted to be in peace, and I realized that fighting for peace is . . . well, it can't work. If you want to be in peace, then be in peace. Now I am choosing peace. All that said, I do really understand the desire to be a warrior, and I think there are times when it is very appropriate. I certainly will stand up for what I believe, and say what I think and say what I mean. I'm not sure how that would fit with the word, "spiritual," except that I think a great deal of my spiritual path has been and still is about telling the truth. It often takes courage to tell the truth because so many people are afraid of it. And I guess my intention is always to be fully myself, which also takes courage. (Because I'm not pretending to be the person that people might want me to be). I do think that courage is an essential quality to develop if we want to be an effective force in the world. The word "courage" comes from the French word meaning "heart." We must come from our hearts in order to find the courage to do what is right.
