Last night, while packing for our trip up north Dave and I realized two very important household items that we were out of:
- Toilet Paper
- Coffee Creamer
Now, being a family who loves coffee and of course needs to poop - we dashed out the door towards the store!
Let me say, that we are much happier here in North Carolina, by doing so though we gave up "convenience" for "peace". A good trade indeed, unless of course you are out of TP and creamer. It's been a little bit of an adjustment for me to be mindful of remembering such things...I had gotten so used to the store being only two blocks away! oh, and did I mention that Floridians stay up much later than North Carolinian's?
Yeah - you guessed it. The stores about to close and we are a good 10 minute drive away!
We made it though - Hubby drove (in his jammies) and I (ready for action) sat in the passenger seat as the timer was set. Once there and with minutes to spare, I dashed out of the truck and ran towards the automatic doors of the closest grocery store, just praying and hoping that they would open for me...and they did!
Victory, I thought to myself as I ran in the store, bearing a big smile for my accomplishment. I noticed a cashier and a couple of last minute shoppers in line. so I flashed my big cheesy smile at them, raised a finger as if to suggest that I would only be a minute and ran as fast as I could towards the back of the store.
on a side note: why do they have to place the creamer and TP all the way towards the back of the store?
With a four pack of toilet paper in one arm and a bottle of international delight creamer in the other, I dashed back to the cashier, still smiling - but now because I was so happy to have made it back to the line before the cashier had finished ringing up the first of the two people that were in line when I arrived. I looked to the gentleman in front of me and flashed my grin once more and he said:
"Looks like you were down to the wire."
I looked at the clock which read 9:59pm and said "Yep, and with a minute to spare!"
He then replied "Sometimes A minute's as good as a mile..."
I agreed, we both smiled and moved on with our night parting ways.
And it got me thinking... I mean really thinking about that one brief moment in time and how deeply that one tiny little comment struck me.
"Sometimes A Minute's As Good As A Mile"
It means so much and can be applied to just about any of life's situations. For me, last night it was the tiny victory of making it to the store in time to purchase my household items. Perhaps years ago, I could apply it to the precious memories that I have of my sister who has since passed. For you, it might relate to something completely different...
The meaning though, remains the same no matter where you apply it. it means that even the small things in life are important! and maybe, just maybe when we spend so much time and energy focusing on the 'big" things - The big picture, the future, our past failures (ie: the mile), we miss out on the small things that count. When we realize that sometimes the minute really is as good as the mile, we allow ourselves to savor the moments of life. To find joy in the little things - because even though the big things are important too, it doesn't mean that we have to sacrifice the small things. We can have both!
