What is a "Book of Shadows"? This is the sacred and sometimes secret book that Witches use to keep our spells, receipts, physics and other workings in. We don't often share these books with folks outside of our own coven and family. Because our workings are sacred to us.
Who is to say what the exact teaching was about creating, maintaining and keeping these books as secret tools. In part it may be from the history of oral tradition. That to write something down would kill it. And part of it may be from the history of fear; if one could find our spells and rituals written down, we would not be able to hide who and what we are. And the other fear that if those with ill intention got hold of our sacred texts then they could use the work that we had spent our lives learning and creating and use it for their own purpose and would they have power over us then?
As an avid journal writer, I feel that the need to keep these things secret is more about protecting the sacred self. When I write down a spell or a chant, it is something that I have worked hard on, channeled, or put into practice that works for me. It is a piece of my soul that I give only to those who are in need, or are most deserving. Would I let them in on my deepest, darkest secrets? If the answer is no, then they do not get access to my sacred book either!
